Registration and Fees
The registration form includes payment of mandatory registration fees, plus optional purchase of dorm housing, banquet tickets, pre-conference workshops and seminars, field trips and logo items. We recommend using the online form as some of these options are first-come first served, though there is a mail-in PDF available for download. Use the links above to register. After April 15, a late fee of $25 USD applies to all registrations.
- Regular Rate: $150 ($175 after April 15)
- Student, Independent, Retired Rate: $75 ($100 after April 15)
Registration fee includes all conference concurrent and plenary sessions, water and coffee breaks, all receptions, and morning/evening shuttle service between campus and downtown. Meals are on your own. To provide a more sustainable conference, no giveaway items will be included with registration. For those who want them, conference shirts, totes, water bottles and coffee mugs can be ordered on this form.
Membership in ASLE
All presenters must be members of the Association for the Study of Literature and Environment (ASLE) and/or one of its international affiliated organizations (ALECC, ASLEC-ANZ, ASLE-India, ASLE-Japan, ASLE-Korea, ASLE-Taiwan, ASLE-UKI, EASLCE, or OSLE-India (now TiNai)) by April 15. Information about ASLE membership and online registration/renewal can be found at the ASLE web site (http://www.asle.org/).
Cancellation Policy
Cancellations of conference registrations must be made in writing to ASLE's Managing Director (info@asle.org). Requests received by April 15, 2013, will receive a full refund of all fees, less a $25 processing fee, following the conclusion of the conference. Requests received between April 15 and May 4, 2013, will receive a 50 percent refund of the registration fee and dorms ONLY, following the conclusion of the conference, but fees for field trips and the banquet will not be refunded. After May 4, 2013, no refunds will be made.
Accommodations
Dormitory housing is available at the University of Kansas, and there are three conference hotels, two in downtown Lawrence, and one adjacent to campus. Information on all housing options is found at the conference website: http://asle.ku.edu/logistics/#accommodations.
Dorm facilities are located within a 5 minute walk of the Kansas Union. Participants are able to select a double or single option. All rooms come with bedroom linen and towels, and internet access. Participants who select double will have a roommate in their bedroom. Participants who select single will have their own bedroom, but will have to share a bathroom with other participants. Dorm rooms are available ONLY the nights of Monday, May 27 through Saturday, June 1.
Sign up for dorms using this registration form; the hotels must be booked directly through their reservation lines. If you have questions please contact ASLE managing director Amy McIntyre at info@asle.org.
IMPORTANT: KU policy states ASLE must give them a dorm count THREE WEEKS prior to the conference start. Therefore, you should book your room by May 4 to guarantee space. This also means we CANNOT give refunds for canceled or changed reservations after May 4, 2013 as they will still bill us.
Parking and Transportation
Lawrence is about an hour drive from Kansas City International Airport (MCI). With no inexpensive regular shuttle service available, we have arranged for First Student bus service to provide transportation to and from the airport, but on a limited basis concentrated on the first and last days of the conference. Please wait to sign up for the bus service until after you have made your flight reservations; there will be a separate place on the conference website to do this. Cost will be $25 round trip/$15 one way. Commercial shuttle and rental car information is on the conference website: http://asle.ku.edu/logistics/#transportation.
Free parking will be available in the dorm lots, and there is pay-as-you-go parking in a covered lot adjacent to the KU Union. In addition, there will be free shuttle buses between campus and downtown running in the mornings and evenings. Please consult your hotel when reserving about their parking options and fees.
Pre-Conference Workshops and Seminars (Tuesday, May 28, 2-5pm)
There are six seminars and one workshop offered this year, each limited to 15 participants. You must contact workshop coordinator Greta Gaard, greta.gaard@uwrf.edu, by March 15 to check availability and pre-register for workshops BEFORE you pay here. Paying is the final step in registering for these seminars. Full descriptions are found at http://asle.ku.edu/Preconference/index.php.
Author's Reception (Thursday, May 30, 8:00-9:30pm)
If you have published a book (or books) since the last ASLE conference in June 2011 you may want to participate in the Author's Reception. This event provides the opportunity to meet and greet readers, as well as sell and sign copies of your books. Please send your name and contact information, along with the title, publisher, and ISBN of the book, to Salma Monani at smonani@gettysburg.edu. You or your publisher must arrange to have copies on hand. ASLE is providing only the space, not the books. For shipping information, see the conference publisher's page (http://asle.ku.edu/logistics/publishers.php).
Optional Field Trips (Friday, May 31)
To help you make a choice, please see full trip descriptions published on the conference website at: (http://asle.ku.edu/fieldtrips/). Bus transportation will be provided for all off campus events. Space in trips is limited, and filled on a first come, first served basis. Waitlists will be kept, in the event openings arise. Pay only for your first choice, but please indicate second and third choices if your first choice is unavailable. You will be contacted about placement in an alternate trip if your first choice is full. No plenaries or sessions are scheduled during these times .
Even in May, Kansas weather can get hot. Please bring an adequate supply of water, as well as sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats. Lunch will not be included with any of the fieldtrips; please make sure to eat before leaving on the trip and/or to bring some snacks. You take part in these trips at your own risk; ASLE and University of Kansas assume no responsibility whatsoever, and you will be required to sign a waiver form to participate. If you have any questions about these trips, contact Byron Caminero-Santangelo at bsantang@ku.edu. Except where noted, please do not contact the leaders of individual field trips or the organizations hosting them.
No plenaries or sessions are scheduled during these times so that all conference participants may attend if they desire. Spouses and traveling companions are welcome to sign up as well, so please indicate the number of tickets you wish to purchase.
There are two trips that need to be reserved/paid for separately through the tour operators. Advance reservations ARE necessary for these trips but must be made through the groups/contacts listed on the form and at the website (http://asle.ku.edu/fieldtrips/).
Conference Banquet (Saturday, June 1, 7-9:30pm)
The conference will conclude with a banquet to bring participants together in the spirit of conviviality that we value at all ASLE conferences. Tickets are $40 per person, and we will have a feast that features vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options, prepared with as many organic and local ingredients as are available and in season. Wine and local beers will also be included. There will be a short program of announcements and concluding remarks, but no plenary speaker so that attendees can enjoy their final evening in each other's company. Spouses and traveling companions are welcome to attend as well.
